Take profit: when to cash in crypto profits
Come e quando chiudere un'operazione in guadagno: take profit fisso, parziale e a gradini spiegati in modo semplice.
The problem
Everyone knows when to buy, few know when to sell. Un guadagno non incassato può sparire in un'ora: il take profit è l'ordine che chiude la posizione quando il prezzo raggiunge il tuo obiettivo.
Three ways to use it
- Fixed: you decide a target (e.g. +3%) and close everything there. Simple and disciplined.
- Partial: you cash in half at +3% and let the rest run with the stop moved to break-even. That way you risk nothing more on the remaining part.
- Step-by-step: you sell a third at each target. Useful in strong trends.
Risk/Reward ratio
If you risk 2% (stop loss) to make 4% (take profit), the ratio is 1:2. With this ratio you can be wrong more than half the time and still break even. It's the most important number to look at before entering.
Remember the fees
On Kraken and other exchanges every buy and sell costs a fee (often between 0,1% and 0,4%). A take profit that's too close risks being eaten up by costs: always calculate them before.
