Marco:Hello everyone and welcome to a new episode of "VcriptoV — Crypto in plain English"! I am Marco.
Giulia:And I am Giulia. Hi Marco, and hi to everyone listening to us!
Marco:So, Giulia, today we have a topic that I think will make quite a few listeners perk up. The title of today's episode is: "Algorithms at the wheel: what trading bots can really do (and where they crash)".
Giulia:Quite a big title! But look, it's a fundamental topic. Everyone wants to understand whether these famous bots are financial geniuses or mousetraps.
Marco:Esatto!
Giulia:70 out of 100, exactly. So we are right in the "Greed" zone, meaning greed and enthusiasm.
Marco:And in fact I wonder: greed for what? Sure, I look at Bitcoin and it's right there, sitting at 86.112 dollars. Over the last twenty-four 39 hours it made a tiny minus 0,5%. I mean, excuse me, but where is all this stadium-like euphoria if Bitcoin is practically not moving? It's stuck like a post on the highway!
Giulia:Ma infatti, aspetta!
Marco:Ah, okay, so it's a kind of short-term memory of the market.
Marco:Meaning? Where is the money going?
In testa abbiamo i token legati all'intelligenza artificiale e alle infrastrutture.
Giulia:Exactly. It's the classic sectoral rotation. And you know who is paying the bill for this party?
Giulia:Right. Who is suffering today is mostly the gaming and metaverse sector. Look at the numbers from the last twenty-four 39 hours: The Sandbox, SAND, is down 4,0%. Decentraland, MANA, is down 4,6%. And the hardest hit is taken by Axie Infinity, AXS, which crashes by a minus 9,3%!
Marco:Povero gaming!
Giulia:In parole molto semplici, sì.
Marco:See? That's exactly the point! I look at these numbers, I see FET shooting up plus 14,5% and AXS losing almost 10%, and my blood pressure immediately spikes. Because I say: "Damn, what if I had been positioned on AXS instead of FET? How was I supposed to know in advance?". Keeping up with all these rotations, charts, buying when it goes up, selling before it crashes... Giulia, it's crazy stress! It consumes your life!
Giulia:Ah, Marco... the fairy tale of the autopilot that makes you rich while you enjoy the beach! I must say it is one of the most powerful and dangerous narratives in the entire crypto industry.
Marco:Wait, are you already bursting my bubble before we even start?
Giulia:It's not a matter of bursting dreams, it's a matter of looking inside the engine before getting into the car and stepping on the 39 accelerator. Because bots can be extremely useful tools, for goodness sake, but they are not at all what people think. And above all, they don't think like a human being.
Giulia:Come on, let's talk right away about the true anatomy of an algorithm, because the difference between reality and illusion lies right there...
Giulia:Come on, let's talk right away about the true anatomy of an algorithm, because the difference between reality and illusion lies right there...
Marco:Ma infatti, parliamone.
Marco:Wait, pump the brakes for a second. So you're telling me that if I set up a bot, it does nothing more than execute elementary mathematical orders? No super advanced artificial intelligence scanning global order flows and deciding the best strategy of the day in real time?
Giulia:Ma figurati!
Marco:Ah. So it has no self-preservation instinct. It doesn't stop and say: "Hey, look, the whole sector is collapsing here, maybe it's best to stay still and wait for the waters to calm".
Giulia:Exactly! Zero instinct, zero flexibility. For the bot, there are no "rough waters", there are only numbers coming in through the exchange's APIs, which are the data communication channels. To give you a silly comparison that makes it crystal clear: think of your home thermostat.
Marco:Okay, let's use the thermostat. I'll follow you.
Giulia:Se tu imposti il termostato a venti gradi, cosa fa? Semplice, no?
Marco:I love this definition, "financial thermostat". I'm noting it down. But, sorry Giulia, if it's so... stupid — if you'll pardon the term — how can people believe the fairy tale of "making money while sleeping"? I mean, there must be a reason why this myth is so hard to die online.
Marco:Well, I imagine a nice bonfire of carbon fiber against the wall. So, help me understand this rigidity better. When we talk about pre-set mathematical rules... what are these rules? I mean, materially, what does a bot do all day? Does it just sit there staring at charts like we do with green and red Japanese candlesticks?
Giulia:Exactly! Human latency is huge. And then we have another big flaw when we operate in the markets: we think.
Marco:Hey! Don't generalize, I try to do it as little as possible, you know!
Marco:Meaning, if you haven't written in the code "if all hell breaks loose, shut down", it keeps dancing on the Titanic while the ship is sinking.
Giulia:Esatto.
Marco:Ma no!
Giulia:We tell them that that bot doesn't exist, or rather, that if such an algorithm really existed, whoever invented it would keep it well-protected in a hardened server instead of selling it on Telegram for 49 dollars a month. But above all, we tell them to stop looking for an oracle. Bots do not predict the future. Bots manage the present based on rules written in the past.
Marco:Clear, crystal clear. But, Giulia, you talked my ear off about the dangers, the rigidity of bots, and the fact that they are basically glorified thermostats. But if we are here talking about it, and if even large investment funds use algorithms to manage staggering amounts of money, it means these gadgets do something good. I mean, what are the real strengths? Where is a bot objectively superior to a flesh-and-blood trader?
Giulia:Ah, well, now we are getting to the heart of the matter. Because when you use a bot for what it actually knows how to do, and not for miracles, the advantages are incredible. Just think about stress management, discipline... and one strategy in particular, very useful in sideways markets, called Grid Trading. Would you like me to explain how this grid works and why in certain market situations it becomes an absolute powerhouse?
Giulia:Look, imagine a step ladder. Let's say you're watching a market that isn't going too high or too low, but keeps oscillating within a very specific price channel.
Giulia:Exactly, that's it! The famous sideways market. So, what does a bot set up with a grid, meaning Grid Trading, do? You define a minimum price and a maximum price, let's say the extremes of the corridor. Then you tell it: "Between these two extremes, draw ten horizontal lines at regular intervals".
Marco:The rungs of the ladder.
Giulia:Just the rungs. And the rule for the bot is very simple: on every rung below the current price it places a buy order. On every rung above the current price it places a sell order. So what happens in practice?
Marco:Wait, I'm getting there... if the price drops and touches a lower rung, the bot buys.
Giulia:It buys! And as soon as it buys at that level, it immediately places a sell order on the rung right above. When the market goes back up one step, it sells and pockets that small margin. Then the price drops again? It buys again. It goes up? It sells again. It does dozens, sometimes hundreds of micro-trades a day, accumulating small margins on every single oscillation.
Marco:So, it turns the boredom of the sideways market into a sort of automatic pinball machine. The ball bounces between the bumpers and every bounce scores points... meaning, it monetizes pure volatility!
Giulia:Esattamente.
Marco:Ma infatti! Io dopo tre ordini mi distraggo, vado a bermi un caffè, mi perdo il rimbalzo e poi mi viene l'ansia.
Giulia:Ma è normale, siamo esseri umani!
Giulia:It's the classic take profit error, which we often talk about. Having a clear exit plan, whether in steps or with fixed levels, is fundamental. The bot doesn't ask if the token has a nice project or if the founder is nice. Does it have a step target? Reached the level, it closes the established fraction and brings the result home. Iron discipline, zero hesitation.
Marco:And the same goes the other way around, I guess. With the stop loss. How many times do you see the price drop, get close to the point where you should cut your loss, and start saying: "Well, I'll move the stop just a tiny bit lower, you'll see it will bounce now"? And then the bounce never comes and you end up with half your account gone.
Giulia:That is the most common and devastating mistake of all. Moving the stop loss while the trade is in loss is the recipe for getting badly hurt. The bot doesn't care if you're sorry to close in the red: the rule said "cut here"? It cuts there. Period. It preserves your capital for the next trade.
Marco:So, to recap: no stress, sleeping peacefully at night without waking up at four in the morning to check your phone with the brightness maxed out blinding you, lightning-fast orders, and flawless execution of the strategy.
Giulia:Exactly. If you have a strategy that works on paper and you know exactly what market context you're in, the bot is the best right-hand man you could ever wish for. Because it does the dirty work, the boring, repetitive, and psychologically draining stuff. You set the rules of the game, and it applies them without batting an eye.
Giulia:Ah, the million-dollar question... or maybe I should say a whole Bitcoin! Well, Marco, the answer is brutally simple: because bots are fundamentally stupid. Or rather, they are completely devoid of context. They haven't the slightest clue what is happening in the real world outside of their code.
Marco:What do you mean "stupid"? I mean, wait. Until two minutes ago you explained to me that they are perfect mathematical machines, ultra-fast, that eliminate human error, and now you tell me they are stupid? You're contradicting yourself, Giulia!
Giulia:No, guarda, nessuna contraddizione, ti spiego meglio.
Giulia:Exactly, spot on. Imagine sudden and heavy news. I don't know, an unexpected regulatory ban in a major country, or a security flaw discovered in a layer-1 protocol. The price of that crypto starts plummeting. Now, what does a human trader with a shred of common sense do? They stop. They say: "Wait a minute, what's going on? Let me check Twitter, let me check the official channels". They try to figure out if the project is dead or if it's just a momentary panic. In short, they assess the situation using their brain.
Marco:Okay, this is a nightmare scenario. But excuse me, earlier we talked about the stop loss, that kind of emergency parachute. Isn't it enough to set a stop loss on the bot to avoid ending up like this? I mean, telling it: "If the price drops below this level, sell everything, shut down the machines, and let's go grab a coffee".
Giulia:On paper yes, absolutely. And in fact, you *must* set it if you use certain strategies. But here we run into another fatal limitation of bots, which is tied to the very structure of crypto markets: the "flash crash" and "slippage".
Giulia:Exactly, it happens all the time. It is the classic bounce that leaves everyone empty-handed. The bot, rigidly following the rule, makes you exit at the absolute worst moment, realizing the maximum loss. A human trader, seeing the violence of the movement and the completely empty order book, might have waited a few minutes to figure out if it was a temporary manipulation or a technical error of the 'exchange. The bot does not wait. It was too fast... at making you lose money.
Giulia:Oh, fake breakouts, or "fakeouts", are trend-following algorithms' kryptonite. Think about it, many bots are programmed to buy when the price breaks above a certain historical resistance level. The bot sees the price break that line, gets pumped and says: "Okay, we're going up! Buy, buy, buy!". But right after that, big players—the famous whales—start dumping on everyone who got in late. It's a trap. The price plunges back down at full speed. The bot then says: "Oh no, red alert! We're back below support, the strategy says sell!". And it sells at a loss. Two minutes later the price goes back up. The bot buys again. Then it drops again. The bot sells again.
Marco:Wait, so it does the exact thing a panicked beginner would do! Buying high and selling low on repeat!
Giulia:Exactly! In jargon it's called "whipsawing", like the movement of a saw going back and forth. In a very nervous and volatile market, a bot that isn't perfectly calibrated can literally self-destruct in a few hours. It makes dozens of trades all in microscopic losses which, added to the trading fees you have to pay to the 'exchange for each single transaction, drain your account without you even realizing it.
Marco:But that's terrible! I mean, are we saying that the bot, which was supposed to be the cold, emotionless executor to protect us from our psychological mistakes, ends up acting like a schizophrenic trader if the market doesn't follow standard textbook rules?
Marco:So, to summarize this catalog of disasters: bots crash on black swans because they are blind to news; they accumulate huge losses if the trend changes and they don't have a stop loss; they suffer slippage in flash crashes by selling at the worst price; and they get chewed up by false breakouts through compulsive trading and non-stop fees. Giulia, honestly, you're making me not even want to look at a bot screen anymore.
Giulia:Ma guarda, l'obiettivo non è spaventarti o demonizzare questi strumenti, anzi. Io stessa li uso!
Marco:Oh no, c'è dell'altro?
Giulia:Well, unfortunately yes. So far we've talked about math, bad luck, price dynamics. In short, clean things. But we haven't yet addressed the human factor... from the side of those who sell you these bots. Because out there on the web, there's an incredible jungle of traps, red herrings, and dangers that have nothing to do with charts, and a lot to do with the security of your money.
Marco:Ah, I see where this is going. The classic no-man's land of miraculous bots sold on Telegram or social media...
Marco:Exactly! Like the ones that land in your private messages on Telegram or that you see scrolling in Instagram videos, with the screenshot of the guy leaning against a Lamborghini in Dubai and the caption: "This bot generates 3% a day guaranteed without doing anything, click here". I mean, who still falls for that in 2026?
Giulia:Unfortunately a lot of people, Marco. Really a lot. And you know why? Because today scammers, or anyway those who sell smoke, have gotten clever. They no longer just tell you "trust me", they show you data. They slap reports, historical charts in your face... in short, the so-called *backtests*.
Marco:Wait, let's clear up this term for our listeners for a second. Basically, backtesting is... running the algorithm on past data to see how it would have performed if we had turned it on a year ago, two years ago, right?
Giulia:Exactly, just like that. You take Bitcoin's historical price data, for example, and you tell the software: "If I had bought here and sold there over the last three years, how much would I have made?". And the computer, which is super fast, does all the calculations and spits out a gorgeous chart, a green line shooting straight up to the sky without a single hesitation. You look at it and think: "Damn, math doesn't lie, this algorithm is a genius, I need to buy it right now!".
Marco:Ok, and where is the 'catch? I mean, if it really worked on the real market of the past, why shouldn't it work from today onwards?
Se all'esame ti rifanno quelle stesse identiche dieci domande, prendi trenta e lode. Sei un genio della storia?
Marco:Well, no. I just memorized a specific test from the past by heart. If the professor changes even a single comma or asks me a question about the next chapter, I go blank and fail 'instantly.
Giulia:Exactly! This is 'overfitting in trading bots. Those who develop these commercial software modify the code parameters hundreds, thousands of times, adding filters and absurd rules, until they find the perfect mathematical combination that *exactly* fits the oscillations that Bitcoin has already made in past months. They tailor it like a bespoke suit onto the body of the past. But the future market is never identical to the past one. It is fluid. So, as soon as you buy that bot and activate it on the real market, at the first unexpected variation... bam, it gets confused and burns your account.
Marco:So basically, they are selling you a computer programmed to perfection to win yesterday's match. Which today, however, has to face a completely different opponent playing with a new strategy.
Giulia:That's a fantastic metaphor, Marco! I'm totally stealing it from you. Yes, exactly like that. And besides, let's take a little reality check. Let's think about this together: if you were a genius programmer and had managed to create a secret algorithm, a true automated money-making machine capable of generating 10% or 20% per month consistently and safely... what would you do?
Giulia:Well obviously! It's elementary logic. People who sell these things often make much more from selling bot licenses or related training courses than from actual trading. Or, another classic, they make money from the affiliate commissions that exchanges pay them every time you, through his bot, make a' trade. So he doesn't care if the bot makes you win or lose; he only cares that the bot makes a lot of trades to generate commissions in his favor.
Marco:Che storia...
Giulia:You did very well to bring up the' subject, because here we go from the risk of "losing money due to a bad strategy" to the risk of "finding your account literally emptied in five minutes". So, APIs — which stands for Application Programming Interface — are basically digital access keys. Imagine them as a remote control or a spare key that you create on your exchange and give to the bot to allow it to communicate with your account and place orders.
Marco:Ok, so I go into my exchange settings, go to the API section, create a new key, get super long codes, and paste them into the bot's control panel. But can't the bot do whatever it wants with my crypto this way? Can it even steal them?
Marco:Ok, I guess "Withdrawal" means the bot has the power to take my crypto and send it to an external wallet, maybe the bot creator's.
Giulia:Esatto.
Marco:Ok, this is crystal clear and also seems quite easy to control. I won't check that box, I'll just leave' trading authorization and I'm safe. The bot can buy and sell, but my money still stays locked inside my personal exchange account, protected by my security systems. Right? Can I sleep soundly?
Giulia:Eh... you'd like that, wouldn't you? Unfortunately, Marco, scammers and hackers know about this defense and have found an incredibly sneaky loophole. It's called an "API exploit" or API market manipulation. It's a terrifying thing because they can empty your account even if you have totally disabled withdrawal permissions.
Marco:Wait, wait. How can it steal my money if it can't withdraw it? It can only trade' inside my account!
Marco:Ok, I picture the scene. And then?
Giulia:Then, the' attacker puts that junk coin up for sale on their account at a crazy price, like 1000 times its real value. At the same time, using the compromised trading API keys of the bots of all unsuspecting users, they launch a mass market buy order for that same junk coin. In a millisecond, all users' accounts buy that useless coin at astronomical prices from the' hacker.
Marco:Oh my god... Basically the' hacker sold you hot air in exchange for your real Bitcoins or your stablecoins.
Giulia:Esattamente!
Marco:Oh my goodness, Giulia, this is incredibly malicious. It's kind of the perfect theft, and you can't even blame the' exchange because you created the keys and gave them to a third party. I'm getting a bit' anxious, I have to tell you. You're completely turning me off from touching a bot even with a ten-foot pole!
Marco:Please, tell me there's a lifeboat because after this rundown of dangers I really need to understand how we can do a dress rehearsal in total safety...
Giulia:The lifejacket' is there, Marco, and it's one of the most useful inventions for anyone wanting to approach the markets without getting hurt: it's called paper trading, or simulated trading.
Marco:You mean good old "let's pretend"? Like Monopoly?
Giulia:Just like Monopoly, but with real data, in real time. Almost all serious platforms, or analysis software like TradingView or the exchanges themselves, offer a demo environment. They give you a virtual balance, I don't know, ten thousand fake dollars, and let you run your bot, your grid strategy, or your indicators directly on the real market, with the real order book and prices by the second.
Marco:Wait, so the bot sees Bitcoin at 86.112 dollars exactly as I see it on the market, receives orders, buys, sells, but with plastic money.
Giulia:That's right. You see that Fear and Greed at 70, you see the fluctuations, you suffer slippage if the market moves fast, but the' impact on your bank account is zero. Absolute zero. And it's essential, because paper trading does something that no historical backtest can ever do: it forces you to experience the reality of the market as it happens.
Marco:Because in the backtest you had the answer ready on the back of the sheet, like you were saying before!
Giulia:Exactly! In backtesting you already know how the' story ended. With real-time simulation, however, you have to wait the next minute, the' next hour, the next week. And you see how the code behaves when the market doesn't do what you planned. Maybe you programmed a grid convinced that the price would stay between 84.000 and 88.000 dollars, and instead a sudden downward breakout happens and you see the virtual bot starting to buy on every drop, accumulating simulated loss upon simulated loss.
Marco:And there you say: "Good thing they were fake!". You let out that sigh of relief that saves your life, literally.
Marco:Sure, the algorithm is like a car's autopilot: if you set coordinates leading into a ravine, it drives right in at a constant speed, without a moment' hesitation and without blinking.
Giulia:Perfect metaphor. It doesn't brake, it has no steering instinct. And there's another golden rule about the method: the duration of the test. It's not enough to run a bot in simulation for forty-eight hours, see that it made a plus two percent and say 'Ok, I'm a quantitative finance genius, now I"m putting all my savings into it".
Marco:Eh, I imagine... two days of quiet sideways market don't tell you anything about what happens during a day of macroeconomic news or extreme volatility.
Giulia:You have to test it on different cycles. Weeks when the market shoots up, weeks when it plummets, days when it's flat as a surfboard. You have to see if the strategy holds up to stress. And only after, if and when you decide to switch to real capital, the advice is to start with a microscopic amount. What we call the "pizza and beer amount".
Marco:Meaning a sum that, even if the bot goes crazy at three in the morning due to a bug in the code and wipes it out completely, you have a bitter laugh, turn off the computer, and sleep peacefully anyway.
Giulia:Exactly. Without ruining your weekend or your mental health. Because trading, let's always remember, is a journey of risk management, not an instant lottery. Technology is a formidable ally to get rid of laziness, to avoid being glued to charts twenty-four'seven, but it requires study, discipline, and above all, a lot of critical thinking. If someone contacts you on internet offering a magic wand to make fixed amounts every day without doing anything, the right answer is only one: close the chat and block the profile.
Marco:Launch the immediate shutdown bot, now that's an algorithm that always works one hundred percent! Come on, I think the picture is crystal clear: technology yes, automation too, but with hands firmly on the steering wheel, the emergency brake within reach of your fingers, and lots and lots of caution before entrusting our savings to any line of code.
Giulia:I'd say that perfectly sums up everything we talked about today.
