Marco:Hello everyone and welcome to a new episode of *VcriptoV — Crypto in chiaro*! I'm Marco...
Giulia:...and I'm Giulia. Welcome back!
Marco:Today we tackle a topic that is a true classic for those taking their first steps in this world, but unfortunately is also one of the most devastating traps. Today's episode title says it all: *"100x Illusion: why leverage destroys beginners"*.
Giulia:A strong title, I know, but I assure you it's the pure and simple truth. Leverage promises stellar gains with very little money, but for those who don't know how it works, it almost always turns into a one-way ticket to blowing up your account.
Marco:Esatto.
Giulia:Let's start as always with the king of the market: Bitcoin.
Marco:Well, Bitcoin is doing decidedly well! We are above $85.000. To be precise, cruising comfortably at $85.978. Over the last 24 hours it did a nice +1,3%, and if we look at the last seven days we're at +2,2%. In short, a steady climb, without jolts but very solid.
Giulia:Meaning full "Greed" territory.
Marco:Ma infatti!
Marco:Ok, dai, smorzami l'euforia.
Marco:Like?
Marco:Ah. So everything isn't going up across the board.
Giulia:No way! And that's not all. If we look at the seven-day picture, there's more confirmation. Look at Solana: today it's up a nice +2,8% reaching 121,72 dollars, but over the last seven days it's still in the negative at -0,4%. And XRP? In the last 24 hours it shows a +2,0% reaching 1,52 dollars, but if you look at the week it's down by 2,9%.
Marco:Ok, ho capito il messaggio. Cioè, noi umani abbiamo questo difetto psicologico, no?
Marco:And I imagine it's right at moments like this that the temptation to use leverage arises.
Giulia:Just think, it's the perfect trap. A beginner sees AAVE jump +12% in a single day and makes an immediate, completely flawed mental calculation.
Marco:Let me guess the flawed calculation: "If I had put 100 euros in, I would have made 12 euros... but if I had used 100x leverage, those 12 euros would have become 1.200 euros!".
Giulia:Exactly that! It's the illusion of fast and easy money. People see the green percentages of altcoins and think that financial leverage is a kind of magical shortcut to get rich overnight. But the reality is that leverage is an extremely sharp tool, and if you don'how to handle it you will cut your hands before you even realize it.
Marco:Ok, so Giulia, let's pause for a moment on this point. Let'put ourselves in the shoes of someone who just opened the app on their phone, sees the greed index at 72, sees altcoins flying and hears for the first time about "10x leverage" or "100x leverage". What concretely is this leverage? How does this mechanism work that sounds so fantastic in words but practically destroys beginners' accounts?
Marco:And that capital you put on the line is what in technical jargon they call "margin", right?
Giulia:Esatto, il margine di garanzia. Cioè la tua fiche sul tavolo verde. L'exchange ti dice: "Tu mettimi qui questi soldi a garanzia.
Giulia:Perfetto, esattamente 1.000 euro.
Marco:Awesome! Now let's imagine I buy a coin and this coin takes a nice forward leap of 10%. In the spot market, the normal one without leverage, my 100 euros would have become 110 euros. A gain of 10 euros, nice, you can buy a margherita pizza and a drink with that. But with 10x leverage, that +10% is not calculated on my 100 euros, it's calculated on the total 1.000 euros of the position!
Giulia:Exactly. 10% of 1.000 euros is 100 euros in net profit.
Marco:Because if the market goes the other way, you don't lose with the same calmness as you do in the normal market.
Giulia:No way at all! Let's redo the exact same calculation with a minus sign in front. You enter the market with your usual 100 euros, set 10x leverage, so you always have an open position of 1.000 euros. Only the market, instead of going up by 10%, pulls back and drops by 10%. What happens at that point, Marco?
Marco:What happens is that a 10% loss on a 1.000 euro position corresponds to exactly... 100 euros in losses.
Giulia:And how much had you put down as collateral margin?
Marco:100 exact euros.
Giulia:There you go. Translated into plain English: with a very normal downward fluctuation of 10%, which in the cryptocurrency world literally happens between the first and second half of a soccer match, you lost one hundred percent of your money. You're completely tapped out. Wiped out. Game over.
Marco:And the exchange doesn'lose a single cent of its 900 lent euros.
Giulia:Neanche mezzo millesimo.
Giulia:Exactly, and this leads us to the true nightmare of every novice trader, a term that sounds almost clinical but is actually a definitive sentence: the infamous liquidation.
Marco:That word that anyone hanging out in Telegram groups or on Twitter has read at least once with terror... But if with 10x leverage a minus 10% is enough to lose everything, what the hell happens when someone presses by mistake — or out of pure greed — that button that says "50x leverage" or even "100x leverage"?
Giulia:So, think about this. 100x leverage. It means that with your 100 euros you are moving a value of 10.000 euros. It's like going to a car dealership, putting a hundred euros on the table and walking out with a ten-thousand-euro car.
Marco:Which phrased like this sounds like a dream, I mean, who wouldn't want to manage ten thousand euros having only a hundred in their pocket? It's the finance cheat code, right?
Giulia:Eh, magari. Uno. Per cento. Cioè, Marco, parliamo di niente.
Marco:Wait, let me do the math... if Bitcoin is trading around 85.978 dollars right now, how much would 391% be? Like... 860 dollars?
Giulia:Esatto. I tuoi 100 euro spariscono. Puff. Vaporizzati.
Marco:But this is insane! I mean, I could be right in the long run, maybe Bitcoin bounces after ten minutes and skyrockets to 90.000 dollars, but because it touched that minus 1% for a split second, I'm out of the game.
Marco:But you see, Giulia, the problem is that on social media, on TikTok, on Telegram, it"s full of people posting screenshots saying Ǵ+34%", Ϩ+34%'. And you see these young guys who seem to have turned their lives around with just one trade. That stuff creates crazy psychological pressure on someone who is starting out and maybe only has 200 euros to invest.
Marco:I don't believe it... I mean, it's pure manipulation. They practically sell you an illusion to maybe sell you their trading course or get you to sign up for the exchange using their link.
Marco:Now, that is a fundamental point. Stress. If I buy normal Bitcoin, spot, and it drops by 5%, maybe it annoys me, but I go to dinner peacefully, knowing my satoshis are there. But on leverage... every phone notification could be the exchange's email telling you: 'Dear user, your position has been liquidated". It"s a trauma, I mean, you feel like a total idiot because you saw your money vanish into thin air for a minimal fluctuation.
Marco:But sorry, Giulia, earlier we mentioned NEAR and STX losing more than 5% today. If someone had used 20x leverage on NEAR this morning, thinking that after yesterday's rally it would keep going up... well, they would have been completely wiped out in a few hours, right?
Giulia:Precisely. NEAR is down -5,4%. With 20x leverage, you would have been liquidated long before reaching this point, because just -5% is enough to lose 100% of your capital. Think of those who tried impulse trading this morning seeing NEAR pulling back, convinced they had caught the 'bottom". The market kept dropping and ate them all up. The point is that beginners have no perception of how inherently volatile crypto is. You don"t need leverage to experience intense emotions in this market, I assure you.
Giulia:For the most part yes, it ends up in an insurance fund of the exchange used to cover potential losses if the market moves so fast they can't close your position in time. But the bottom line is that for you, it is lost. There is no 'hey, sorry, I pressed the wrong button". It"s an automated execution handled by software. The software has no heart, it doesn't care if that was your vacation savings.
Marco:Wait, are you telling me that not only do I risk losing everything in a second, but I also pay "'rent" to stay in this dangerous situation?
Giulia:Exactly. It's called the funding rate, and if you don't know it, it's like having a leaky bucket... _(pause)_ but this is an even more subtle trap than instant liquidation.
Marco:Ok, then we absolutely must explain how this energy "vampire" of trading works, because I'm afraid many beginners have no idea it exists...
Giulia:Look Marco, just picture it like a vampire sucking your capital away while you're looking elsewhere. The crypto futures market is not like buying a stock or a token on the spot market and leaving it there in your wallet for a year. In leveraged contracts, to ensure the futures contract price stays pegged to the real market price... exchanges come up with a mechanism called *funding rate*.
Marco:I mean... ok, but in simple terms how does it work? Who pays whom?
Giulia:In very simple terms: every eight hours — usually that's the standard interval — there's a direct exchange of money between traders. If most of the market is betting upwards, meaning they are *long*, the *longs* have to pay a fee to those betting downwards, meaning the *shorts*.
Marco:Aspetta, aspetta. Fammi capire bene.
Giulia:Exactly! The crowd sees SAND gain 13,7% in the last 24 hours, or AAVE post a 12%, and thinks "I must jump in on a leveraged long right now!". Result? There's a huge imbalance: tons of *longs* and very few *shorts*.
Marco:E l'exchange cosa fa?
L'exchange dice: "Vuoi stare long a leva in un mercato super euforico?
Marco:Think about how crazy that is... and how much is this "tax"? Sounds like nothing, right?
Giulia:All'apparenza sì, parliamo magari dello zero virgola zero cinque o zero virgola uno percento ogni otto ore. Sembra poco?
Marco:Ah... wait! I pay it on the total position amplified by the leverage?!
Giulia:Exactly! If you are at 10x leverage, you pay it on the 1.000 euros of total exposure! So, even if the price of Bitcoin stays perfectly still and planted at 85.978 dollars without moving a single cent... your initial capital is slowly chewed away by fees. It's like leaving the car engine idling in the garage: you go nowhere, but the tank empties anyway!
Marco:But that's terrible! I mean, you think you're safe because the price isn't crashing, and meanwhile your margin shrinks... which means your liquidation threshold is getting closer on its own!
Marco:I can well imagine! You get the shakes in your hands. The beginner opening a leveraged position... I mean, how do they spend their days?
Giulia:They don't spend them well! Zero sleep, first of all. You wake up at three in the morning with the blue light of your smartphone illuminating the room, breaking into a cold sweat just to check if you've been liquidated while sleeping. And a small retracement is enough — think of what happened in the last 24 hours to tokens like NEAR or STX, which dropped by 5,4% — to trigger irrational panic.
Marco:And from irrational panic come the worst decisions, I guess. Like the classic rookie move: moving or removing the stop loss!
Marco:Or deletes it altogether and starts praying in three different languages!
Giulia:Exactly! "Pray and hope", which is the worst financial strategy in human history. Or they do so-called *revenge trading*: they add more money to the margin to avoid instant liquidation, thinking they'll recover. They are literally pouring gasoline on the fire to try and put it out.
Marco:It's the famous cognitive bias of loss aversion, right? A loss hurts us twice as much compared to the pleasure of an equivalent gain.
Giulia:Esattamente.
Giulia:But that"s exactly how it is! Think of how many videos you see on social media showing green screenshots that say Ǵ+34% in two hours!". But no one shows you the red screenshot that says "Liquidated' from the previous ten trades. There's a tremendous asymmetry.
Marco:Yeah, they only show you the scratch-card win, not the three hundred losing tickets in the trash! Okay Giulia, it seems to me we've thoroughly broken down both the hidden costs like the funding rate and this psychological vortex that swallows those starting with leverage. At this point, the question naturally arises...
Giulia:Which is? How can a beginner save themselves and take their first steps into the crypto world without getting fleeced?
Marco:Esatto!
Marco:Okay, wait. Let's take a step back for our listeners. Let's explain it very simply: spot market means... buying the real stuff, right? Meaning, without financial wizardry.
Giulia:Exact, just like that! It means that if you have 100 euros and decide to buy Bitcoin, or Ethereum, or Solana, you buy exactly 100 euro of that specific cryptocurrency. It becomes yours, you own it, it's in your exchange wallet or, even better, in your personal wallet.
Marco:Quindi... niente prestiti? Niente debiti con l'exchange?
Giulia:Absolute zero. You only buy what you can afford. And do you know what the fundamental consequence of this approach is? That instant liquidation does not exist.
Marco:Wait, explain this part better. If the market crashes, what happens to my 100 euros on the spot?
Giulia:Well, if the market crashes, let's say by twenty percent... well, sure, it hurts to watch, the equivalent value of your portfolio drops to 80 euros. But the amount of crypto you own remains exactly the same. No one comes knocking on your door in the middle of the night telling you your position has been wiped out and you've lost everything. You still own that little piece of crypto.
Marco:Ah, ok!
Giulia:Indeed! That is precisely the strength of the spot market. Time becomes your ally, or at least it's not your sworn enemy. In financial leverage, on the other hand, time works against you every single second, due to fees and the funding rate continuing to chip away money from your account. On the spot market you can afford to breathe, study the market, and not panic.
Marco:Ah, psychology... Because it's one thing to say it in words, and another to watch your balance dance. I imagine your fingers still tremble on the mouse when you see red, right?
Giulia:They tremble like crazy, I assure you! And that's why my methodical advice for anyone starting right now is this: start with very small amounts, really tiny ones, on the spot market. Amounts that, even if the market were to drop to zero tomorrow morning, wouldn't change your life or your day in the slightest. I don't know, twenty euros, fifty euros max.
Marco:Okay, so let's consider those fifty euros as the ticket price for a practical training course. That's a fair approach.
Giulia:Exactly, view it precisely as a learning cost. With that small sum you buy a crypto and keep it there. Watch what happens when it goes up, what you feel when it goes down. But above all, use this experiment to learn how to use the protection tools that also exist on the spot market.
Marco:Great advice, I'm going to go re-read them too! Because let's be honest, most people enter this world thinking only about how much they can make, and never about how to protect the capital they already have in their portfolio. It's like getting into a sports car without a seatbelt and without brakes, just hoping the road is always straight and clear.
Giulia:Perfect metaphor, Marco. The stop loss is your seatbelt, the take profit is your exit toll booth where you decide to stop for coffee and enjoy the ride. If you learn to use these tools on spot, then you are building solid foundations for the future. You become an investor, not a gambler. If instead you jump straight into derivatives with 39x leverage... well, you aren't trading, you2re just playing Russian roulette, and guess who holds the gun?
Marco:I'd say the exchange, which collects fees anyway and toasts to our health! Listen, Giulia, it seems to me that today's message came across loud and clear: leverage for a beginner is like handing a Formula One car to someone who's still trying to figure out how a driving school clutch works. You end up hitting a wall at the first turn.
Giulia:Exactly. And the saddest thing is that that wall often takes away not just your money, but also your desire to understand an incredible technology like blockchain. So many people get burned by leverage, lose everything in three days, and then go around saying "crypto is a scam". No, crypto isn't a scam, the way you approached the market was a premeditated financial suicide.
Marco:Verissimo.
Giulia:Exactly. Keep your feet on the ground, study, take it one step at a time, and please, only use the spot market to start.
Marco:I totally agree! Guys, we've reached the end of this definitely intense episode. I really hope it helps you avoid making missteps.
