Marco:Welcome to a new episode of VcriptoV — Crypto in chiaro! I am Marco and, as always, I'm here to ask the tough questions, the ones that pop into our heads while staring at the chart on our phone at three in the morning. And with me is Giulia, our compass in this choppy sea. Hi Giulia!
Giulia:Hi Marco! Choppy sea, you say? Well, today it actually feels almost like being in an Olympic swimming pool. Some are swimming fast, some are floating, and some... well, some have decided to do cannonballs.
Marco:Exactly! And speaking of speed, today's title says it all: "Marathon runners or sprinters: the real difference between trading and long-term investing". Because, let's face it, we all enter this world thinking we're sprinters, but then we end up out of breath after two days.
Giulia:Oh yes, that's exactly how it happens. You start out convinced you're going to make the score of a lifetime in 24 hours and then you find out that managing the pressure is a whole different story. But before getting to the heart of the battle between traders and investors, I'd say let's take a look at what's happening outside the window, in the market.
Cioè, siamo in pieno territorio "Greed", avidità.
Giulia:Look, 72 is an interesting number. It's not quite "Extreme Greed" yet, that phase where people start selling their furniture to buy crypto, but we're getting close. There's optimism, there's a desire to take risks. Just think that a short time ago we were much lower. It's that climate where everyone feels a bit like a financial genius, you know?
Marco:Ah, typical. When everything goes up, we're all little Warren Buffetts. But wait, let's look at Bitcoin. It's sitting there at 84.411 dollars. Practically glued in place. I mean, in the last 24 hours it lost 0,6%, in a week it's up by 0,4%... in short, it seems like it's taken a vacation on a beach lounger. What's going on?
Giulia:You know what? Actually, this stability at these levels is crazy. We're talking about Bitcoin above eighty thousand dollars moving sideways. For a long-term investor, it's almost a sign of strength, like saying: "Ok, I climbed up here, now I'm catching my breath without rolling back down". Sure, for those looking for the thrill of +10% a day, Bitcoin right now is... how should I put it... boring?
Marco:Boring! You said it well. But, Giulia, if Bitcoin is sleeping, someone else has decided to throw a rave party without telling anyone. I saw SAND. Have you seen it? +40,6% in 24 hours! I mean, yesterday I was looking at the chart and I almost couldn't believe it. What got into The Sandbox?
Giulia:Crazy, right? When you see a +40% on such a well-known coin, you realize there has been a sudden explosion of interest. Maybe some news, maybe a repositioning into Metaverse tokens that had lagged behind a bit. You see, this is the classic example that drives traders crazy. Whoever was in yesterday feels like a king today. Whoever stayed out... well, they're feeling that annoying sensation we call FOMO.
Ethereum a 2.668 dollari, un po' deboluccio, no? -1,4% in 24 ore.
Giulia:It's normal, we're human. But you see, the difference between a marathon runner and a sprinter lies entirely there: in stress and time management. If you look at the chart every 5 minutes, you're a sprinter (or at least trying to be). If you look at the chart once a month, you might be a marathon runner. But both need a strategy, otherwise they stumble after ten meters.
Marco:Are you telling me that trading isn't just sitting in the Maldives with a laptop in hand? What a disappointment, Giulia, you're ruining a myth!
Giulia:(laughs) If only it were that simple! The reality is that daily trading is a full-time job, and a rather draining one at that. If you feel like diving deeper, I'd say we start right from there. Shall we see what it really means to stay "on top of things" every single day?
Marco:Absolutely yes. I want to understand if my heart would withstand screen stress or if I should take up crypto gardening. So, what is a typical day in the life of a trader like? Is it really all technical analysis and black coffee?
Giulia:More or less, but there's much more beneath the surface. Emotional management is almost more important than the charts themselves. Are you ready to find out if you have what it takes to be a trader or if you'd better remain a peaceful investor?
Marco:I'm super ready. Also because, after seeing that +40% from SAND, I need to know if I should kick myself or if I can sleep soundly anyway. So, let's enter the fast-paced world of the short term...
Marco:Then, Giulia, clear this curiosity for me right away. When I picture a trader, I imagine this super cool guy with four monitors full of colorful charts, intersecting lines, green and red candles moving a mile a minute, and him typing away frantically while sipping an Americano. But is reality really that cinematic?
Giulia:(ride) Magari!
Marco:Okay, but then, if there'te no certainty, how does a trader avoid burning through all their capital on the first wrong move? Because I imagine that if you buy something and it crashes... well, it hurts.
Giulia:Exactly, and this is where you see the difference between a professional trader and a beginner who is just gambling. The professional uses something fundamental: risk management. And the main tool is called "stop loss". Have you ever heard of it?
Marco:Yes, literally "stops the loss", right? But how does it actually work?
Marco:Wait, though. Let's say I set the stop loss at 95. The price drops to 94.9, my stop triggers, it sells everything... and a second later the price bounces and soars to 150! I think I'd get so furious it would make me sick. I mean, it makes you want to throw your computer out the window!
Marco:Indeed, I wonder: how can anyone live like this? I mean, if I have to check my phone even while I'm at dinner with my girlfriend, or wake up at three in the morning to see what's happening on Asian markets... that's no longer an investment, it's a sentence!
Marco:Mamma mia, mi vengono i brividi solo a pensarci.
Oppure puoi fare un take profit parziale o "a gradini".
Marco:Wait, "in steps" how do you mean? Explain it to me like I'm five.
Giulia:Molto semplice.
Marco:Ah, genius! Basically you secure a profit along the way, without the 'anxiety of having to guess the absolute peak, which I imagine is practically impossible to nail.
Giulia:Exactly, hitting the all-time high or the absolute low is pure luck, not technique. But there's another detail that many beginners overlook when short-term trading. A detail that in the long run can drain your account even if your trades are often in the green.
Marco:And what would that be? Let's hear it.
Giulia:The fees. The infamous "fees" of the 'exchange'. Every time you open and close a position, whether you're in profit or loss, the exchange takes a percentage. If you make thirty trades a day, even small ones, those fees add up. Just think that there are traders who at the end of the month find out they broke even on trades, but are at a net loss because they gave away hundreds of dollars in fees to the platform.
Marco:Ma dai!
Mi sento stressato solo a parlarne.
Marco:Boring? Wait, are you telling me I can invest in crypto and sleep at night? It almost sounds like an oxymoron, I mean, we're talking about a market that does +40% in a day like SAND did today and then maybe tomorrow... poof.
Marco:Ok, but then... what"s the "trick'? Because if it were that easy, everyone would do it. Is there a precise strategy or is it just buying and hoping for a miracle?
Giulia:No miracles, just method. The master technique here is DCA, *Dollar Cost Averaging*. In Italian we call it an accumulation plan. Basically, instead of trying to "catch" the perfect moment to buy all at once — which is what drives traders crazy — you decide to invest a fixed amount, say, every month or every week. Regardless of the price.
Marco:Wait, let me get this straight. So if Bitcoin is at 84.411 dollars today, I buy. If next week it drops to 70.000, I buy again? But isn't that counterintuitive? I mean, I'm buying while the value goes down!
Marco:So it's a bit like a gym or Netflix subscription. Every month those 50 or 100 euros are deducted and I accumulate. But Giulia, let's be honest... it takes guts. If I see my portfolio drop -30% in a week, how do I not click "sell all"?
Marco:Ah! See, that's a totally different perspective. I mean, you're telling me that a price drop for long-term investors is almost a... supermarket promotion?
Giulia:Exactly! It"s the crypto "Black Friday'. But watch out, it only works if you've done your homework first. You can't set up a savings plan on a coin that has no fundamentals, on a meme that could vanish tomorrow. The marathon runner studies the technology, looks at who is behind the project, figures out if it solves a real problem. It's the pursuit of intrinsic value.
I bilanci? I whitepaper?
Giulia:Esatto. L'investitore guarda l'adozione.
Marco:To think I used to believe that to make money you absolutely had to sit there and "tinker". Instead, you"re telling me "the less you do, the better', as long as you chose well at the beginning. But Giulia, is there a risk here too, right? The risk that the market changes direction forever and you're left there with your accumulation plan while everything sinks.
Giulia:It's the siren call, Marco! Everyone would love to be the one who buys SAND yesterday and sells today. But the reality is that for every one who succeeds, there are a thousand who buy today "because it's going up" and tomorrow find themselves at a loss. The real question to ask yourself is not how much you want to make, but how much time you have available and how much stress you can handle.
Marco:Ah, time. This is the variable we always forget. Trading is a job, investing is... managing your capital.
Giulia:Precisamente.
Marco:And what are these rules? Because I imagine that, regardless of speed, if you trip over a rock at an 80.000 dollar altitude, you're still going to bump your head.
Giulia:Absolutely. There are some fundamental guidelines, some "methodological tips" that apply to everyone. Whether you want to stare at the screen ten hours or ten minutes a month, if you don't have these basics you're fodder for the market.
Marco:Then I'd say it's time to sum things up. You've convinced me that the marathon is healthier, but now I want to understand how to put these rules into practice without going off track.
Giulia:Look, the first rule, which seems trivial but almost everyone gets wrong, is to do a very honest soul-searching. An exam based on two things: the real time you have available and... anxiety, let's call it that.
Marco:L'esame dell'ansimetro! Bellissimo. Come funziona in pratica?
Giulia:It works by asking yourself a very simple question: if today you decide to buy a crypto and tomorrow you see it has lost 10%, what do you do? Do you panic? Do you start checking your phone every five minutes under the table while having dinner with friends? Well, if the answer is yes, forget about short-term trading. You'd just ruin your health. I mean, it's not for you, period. Much better the marathon: you set your accumulation plan, buy consistently and forget to look at prices for months.
Marco:Ok, this sounds super reasonable. It's a matter of emotional self-management. But what if someone takes the test and says: "Nah, you know what, I don't suffer from anxiety, I have free time, and I want to try being a sprinter"? How do you avoid crashing at the first turn there?
Giulia:If you want to be a sprinter, you absolutely have to use safety gear. You can't run at two hundred miles an hour without a helmet. And this is where two concepts come into play that anyone wanting to trade must drill into their head: stop loss and take profit.
Giulia:Exactly, think of it like a seatbelt that activates on its own. Basically, when you open a trading position, you decide beforehand how much you are willing to lose at most. You set an automatic order on the platform that says: 'If the price drops below this threshold, sell everything immediately and let"s limit the damage".
Marco:Ok, utilissimo. Perché scommetto che a me succederebbe esattamente così.
Giulia:Well look, it happens to everyone at first! It's the classic mistake of people who place the stop loss too close to the purchase price, out of fear of losing even just a euro, and get "knocked out" by normal daily volatility. Or there's the opposite mistake, which is even worse: not setting it at all because 'it"ll bounce back sooner or later anyway". And then you end up with a -80% in your portfolio hoping for a miracle that won't happen. The stop loss needs to be planned using technical analysis, not placed at random.
Marco:Crystal clear. And as for taking home the gains? The... take profit, right? How does it work?
Giulia:Exact, the take profit. That is, deciding when to cash out. Because you see, Marco, buying is the easy part. The real psychological drama when trading is selling when things are going well.
Marco:Eh, I imagine. You see the screen all green, the numbers going up, and you think: "Oh my god, if I wait another two days I'll buy a Tesla!".
Marco:Wait, explain this step thing. How does it work?
Marco:Right, that way you don't have the regret of selling too early if it keeps climbing, but you also don't risk losing everything if it suddenly crashes. Sounds like a great compromise. But listen, earlier you mentioned that "hybrid" approach '...
Marco:Core-Satellite... sounds very space-age. Explain it to me simply.
Giulia:Oh yes, it's super simple! Imagine dividing your capital into two different piggy banks. The first, the "Core", which is the core of your portfolio, represents 39;80% or 90% of the total. You manage this like a marathon runner: you put solid assets in it, make a quiet accumulation plan and don't touch it for years. This is your safe base.
Marco:Ok, and the remaining 10-20%? Is that the satellite?
Giulia:Esatto.
Marco:Meaning I can't use the money from the long-term piggy bank to cover daily trading losses.
Giulia:Never! That is the fastest step towards financial disaster. If the satellite runs out of fuel, you stop and analyze what you did wrong. The "Core" is not touched for any reason.
Marco:Chiara, concreta e spietata come sempre.
Giulia:Exactly. And above all, study. I will never tire of saying it: the crypto market offers no discounts and gives nothing to anyone. If you enter without a strategy and without knowing these tools, you are just betting at roulette. And in the end, the house always wins.
Marco:Holy words, Giulia. And speaking of studying and staying always up to date, I'd say this is the perfect time to remind our listeners where they can find us to delve deeper into all these topics.
